If I tell my doctor about my ovarian cyst will they still let me get my depo provera shot? I'm getting an exam tomorrow and I'm supposed to get my depo provera shot. I have an ovarian cyst, and I was wondering if I'll still be able to get the shot with my cyst?

lad32990 replied: "Most likely. I'm no expert on the shot, but I have a history of some pretty violent ovarian cysts, and they still let me take it."

Elliot replied: "I don't know for sure. But I think you could still get it probably get it. The shot has been known to cause cysts so it could make existing ones worse."

Is it possible I have ovarian cysts? I went to the dr for a pelvic exam and she said she could detect any problems that would explain the stabbing pains I get in my ovaries. I also spotted some around the time the pain was at its worse. Could this be happening because of the depo provera shots I took last year? I haven't had a normal cycle since.

pppmntgrl replied: "I had them and didn't know it until one ruptured and I needed surgery to stop the bleeding. An ultrasound can tell her what is going on there. You could just have "cyclic" pain...or menstrual cycle pain near your ovaries. I had this once and actually went to the doc, it hurt so badly! It was one month before I got pregnant, probably my hormones playing around with my ovaries!"

christina a replied: "well i had a cyst not too long ago.. i got pains where i couldnt move! they hurt so bad it wasnt funny.. i just thought it was my cramps but i was spotting and i saw my belly getting big as well.. looking like i was pregnant and the bad part was i never got checked.. well i did and he said he was going to run some test and never heard back.. anyways .. one day i was in pain real pain constant throwing up sweating and couldnt walk i had to be rushed to the hospital they did a sonogram and saw i had a 15 cm cyst and looked like a bowling ball.. wrapped in my ovaries.. long story short i had surgery.. go get check asap or your gonna end up like me"

balletdncr replied: "Sometimes I get cyst... they are not fun. It can be from a lot of reasons. My sister actually had them during her pregnancy, it is nothing to worry about. I wouldn't think it was from the shot. I could be wrong."

valley_girl_lucha replied: "It's very possible you have a cyst(s), it's also possible it's from the depo shot, it's also possible it's fibroids or something else. Was your doctor an OBGYN? I would strongly suggest you have an OBGYN perform an ultrasound and take a look around in there. A pelvic exam may not be sufficient. In the end, it could be just ovulation pain, but I wouldn't assume anything. I would have the ultrasound to rule out something serious. I get stabbing pains regularly on my right ovary, it feels like I'm ovulating every week (and I know that's impossible). I went and had an ultrasound done of my reproductive organs by an OB specialist (he specializes in high-risk pregnancies, but agreed to do it for me even though I'm not pregnant because I'm a former patient). He found a fibroid at the back of my uterus that is radiating pain toward my ovary. It's harmless, just painful, but since I'm trying to get pregnant I'm not messing with it. Go get it checked out. It may be nothing, but you need to know for sure. Get an ultrasound. Good luck!"

naomiortega replied: "yea u cud have it.i had to go through it,not very fun at all.i had really bad pains in my abdomen.it hurt to even move! i got really big almost like i was pregnant.i felt like i had alot of fluid in my stomach.i went 2 the doctor twice but he didnt find n e thing wrong,he said i prolly had gas(yea rite!) n e ways it got so bad that i couldnt move without screaming.i was rushed 2 the emergency room where i had an ultra sound.i had alot of fluid n they found out i was internally bleeding.i went 2 surgery within the next fifteen minutes.i cud tell it eas serious by the look on the docs face.u sud definitely get it checked out it cud be serious."

Can ovarian cysts prevent your period from coming? Can ovarian cysts prevent your period from coming? I went to the doctors and had an ultra sound, due to my missed periods. And It showed that I has multiple cysts on both ovaries.I have no other symptoms of PCOS,and the doctor said nothing about it.Just that she would put me on birth control and provera, and that I was perfectly fine.I just turned 18 and I have always been regular and healthy, what causes these cysts and how do you know if it's PCOS? is there any other types of Ovarian cysts that do the same thing? (without PCOS symptoms..Acne,weight gain, insulin resistance..etc) I'm very confused about all this, and I want to know what I should be looking for,Incase I do need to get another doctor.

Lem B replied: "I have PCOS and do not have any other sign except for the polycystic ovaries. I've always been thin, my face has always been clear, and I eat healthy. I attribute it to genetics... my family on my mom's side has a history of female problems (fibroids, cysts, etc.). Sometimes changes in your diet can help PCOS, (I think due to the fact that some studies have found a link between insulin and PCOS). Actually the cysts don't prevent your period from coming. The cysts form because your body isn't making sufficient amounts of a hormone that matures eggs in your ovaries and releases them. Most women with PCOS have an excess of estrogen. I'm personally going to get a hormone test done to see what's up. By the way, your doctor will probably monitor you while you are on birth control.. (same thing as me, I'm on birth control too). And ovarian cysts are usually not enough to diagnose PCOS. Hope this helps and I hope you feel better! :) Good luck!"

Functional Ovarian Cysts..? I have been diagnosed with functional ovarian cysts. I experience the typical symptoms (severe abdominal pain to where I cannot move, etc) These cysts will go away with time (1-2 months) and they come back periodically. I know that I have these and they will probably not go away until I have kids. I have learned to deal with the pain...but my question is...can anyone answer why I get these....I am on the depo provera shot! I should not be ovulating, so why am I getting these? Has anyone else experienced this??

Chelsy. replied: "I have!! About a year ago actually. Every woman gets ovarian cysts. Some just occur more than others. For me, it was hereditary. My mom had them. Maybe you should try a different form of birth control. That seemed to help me a little bit. Your diet, DOES play a factor in the pain. No matter what anyone says. The more junk you eat, the worse off you'll be. Stray away from pop & things high in sodium. Good luck & feel better!"

Swiching to the Nuvaring from Depo Provera? So, I saw the gynecologist today. I have an ovarian cyst. I was on Depo Provera, but wanted to switch to something else. He said the Nuvaring was a good choice because it can help shrink ovarian cysts. I agreed, so he put one in me. I wasn't due to have my next depo shot until Oct 10th, but he said it was ok. Then I got home and read on a few different websites that you're supposed to wait until the day of your next shot to put in the ring. Was this ok?

Brutally Honest replied: "Since you're SO close to your next shot due date, it IS fine, especially if he was overly concerned about the cyst."

krogerpharmtech replied: "Yes its okay you wont overdose on hormones. I work in a pharmacy and I see this all the time. From personal experience though I hear alot of girls complain about the Nuvaring."

Lucien B replied: "You hired a professional to give you professional advice knowing you and your specific conditions. Why in the world would you be trying to use a generic website to second guess him?"

Hypothyroid and Ovarian Cysts, please help!? I'm 18 yrs old,and 50 pounds overweight.I went to the doctors a few weeks ago due to missed periods (3).The doctor did and ultra sound and found cysts on both ovaries. She didn't say much about it,just that she would put me on Provera and Birth control to start my periods.I asked for a blood test also, because my grandmother and aunt both have thyroid problems. She called me 5 days later and told me I did infact have Hypothyroidism and prescribed me 50mcg of Levothyroxine (Synthroid).Although I don't have any symptoms of hypothyroid, just the fact that I'm overweight.I just have a gut feeling that I don't need this medication.I just stopped taking Provera 3 days ago and still have no period.I started Levothyroxine the yesterday and feel completely normal on it.I'm suppose to start my birth control also. But I'm nervous about it,the more I read about this online the more I think my doctor is a moron.I don't know why I have cysts, she didn't run any tests. She just prescribes me medications even though they probably shouldn't be taken together.Does anyone have experience with this kind of stuff? My insurance doesn't cover any other clinics, and I can't really afford to see any other doctors. What should I do? :(

Anne replied: "My little sister had hypothyroidism and that caused her irregular periods she wasn't even overweight. She takes both synthroid and birth control to get things regulated. She has much more energy on synthroid--hadn't realized how tired she was all the time. I'd take both of those for now. Ovarian cysts are very common and there really isn't any treatment for them other than trying to prevent them from occurring. Birth control stops ovulation so the cysts don't form. There might be a possibility that you have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). If you really have no other choice of doctors I'd setup a follow up appointment and ask her to test you for PCOS or give you a better explanation of what's going on. Good luck!"

Question about Provera 10mg? I'll make it short and sweet... In August 2005 I got on Depo Provera for a ovarian cyst... I ceased to have a period for 2 years.. In August 2007 I discontinued the Depo shot... August 2008 still no period... December 12th 2008 went to the doctor and got prescribed Provera (or the off brand of Provera) 10mg/ for 10 days...I tested negative for a pregnancy test too... December 21st..took the last of the Provera pills around 6pm December 22nd...had very brief unprotected sex (I'd say about 1 minute before I stopped him and told him it wasn't a good idea) December 23rd...very very light bleeding (maybe could have been from sex? not sure) December 27th...still no period What's going on? Am I prego or does it just take a while for me to have a period after finishing off the pills? Thanks for all the help

Q replied: "Weird. It's always possible you're pregnant, yet the chances are still small. During all those months with no period, did you experience any signs of ovulation, like mittelschmerz or white discharge? It seems more likely that your hormones are still out of whack. I would have thought that normally, you'd start bleeding within 4 days of stopping Provera. But it's always possible your body is still producing enough hormones on its own to support your lining. In any case, you need to call your doctor."

complications of getting pregnant with ovarian cyst? i recently took sono. and my doctor called me today. she said i have cysts. one is ok size and few small (1cm) cysts. 11/2 ago i had ovarian cyst and it was 3inches and took provera to induce my period. my cyst was gone after period and that time doctor also said have few small cysts..... im trying to get pregnant. my doctor told me it wont be a problem to get pregnant. i also heard about PCOS. what is pcos? how do you find out if u have pcos? -i miscarred 2 years ago and i hope it wont happen again. i checked my hormon levels and my doctor said my levels are normal. but i had irregular period for 11/2year. my period came back to normal since jan. i did gain weight tho over 11/2year

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ replied: "Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is characterised by multiple small cysts on the ovaries (like more than 10) and abnormal hormone levels and often other symptoms such as being overweight, having excess hair, acne, diabetes etc. I am thin and I have PCOS. My symptoms are multiple cysts on my ovaries (about 15 on each). I also have slightly elevated testosterone levels. I also have irregular periods. I only have about 4 periods a year and I don't ovulate! So, if you have normal periods and you ovulate each month and only have a few cysts then you don't have PCOS and you should be fine getting pregnant. If however, you exhibit any of the other symptoms of PCOS that I"ve mentioned or particularly if your periods are abnormal then you may have it. PCOS diagnosis is an ultrasound to check for lots of cysts on your ovaries and blood tests to check hormone levels."
